Andrews University is a well-established institution known for its commitment to academic excellence and faith-based education. The university offers a diverse array of programs that integrate rigorous academics with its mission of Christian service, preparing students for both professional success and meaningful lives. Among its innovative offerings, the Department of Aviation stands out as a prominent program combining modern aviation education with practical training in both flight operations and aircraft maintenance. The Department includes a Part 141 FAA-approved Flight School and a Part 147 Airframe & Powerplant (A&P) Maintenance School, reflecting its dedication to high standards of instruction and compliance with regulatory authorities. The Department of Aviation at Andrews University seeks a qualified Chair to provide visionary, academic, and operational leadership for the growing aviation program. This leadership role is uniquely multifaceted, encompassing oversight of educational programs, regulatory compliance, and the management of a university-owned airpark. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to safety, student growth, and aligning the program with industry standards. The Chair acts not only as the academic leader but also as the Airport Manager, a role that requires ensuring adherence to FAA and MDOT Aeronautics regulations along with day-to-day supervision of airfield operations. Importantly, the Chair position is a full-time role requiring a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing, emphasizing alignment with the university's Christian mission and community values. This role offers a competitive salary aligned with the candidate's experience and qualifications. As Chair, the individual will provide strategic and academic leadership by shaping the direction of aviation coursework and ensuring the curriculum aligns with the highest industry standards. They will oversee faculty recruitment, mentoring, and professional development, fostering a collaborative academic culture that supports teaching excellence and student success. Managing the Part 141 Flight Training Program and the Part 147 Maintenance Program requires diligent FAA compliance oversight and quality assurance. The Chair's responsibilities extend beyond the academic realm to include operational management of the campus airpark. They will directly supervise facility maintenance and operations such as runway upkeep, fueling, and safety compliance, in collaboration with FAA and state aviation entities. Financial and administrative duties include budget development, resource allocation, grant writing, fundraising, and industry partnership cultivation. These efforts ensure the aviation department remains well-equipped with modern aircraft, simulators, and instructional technologies. Emphasizing safety is paramount; the Chair fosters a culture of risk awareness and compliance among faculty, staff, and students. They oversee safety reporting, regulatory documentation, and policy enforcement to maintain a secure learning and operational environment. Effective communication skills, conflict resolution, and servant leadership are crucial traits for success in this role. This position offers a unique opportunity for an experienced aviation professional to shape future leaders and technicians in the aviation industry within a faith-based, supportive academic environment.
