The Baker role at Hy-Vee is essential within the Bakery Department and is classified as a non-exempt position. Bakers at Hy-Vee take on the responsibility of preparing and baking bakery products to fulfill customer orders and replenish displays. This role combines technical baking skills with excellent customer service and teamwork. Bakers work under the supervision of the Bakery Department Manager and collaborate closely with the District Store Director, Store Manager, Assistant Managers of Perishables, Store Operations, and Health Wellness Home departments. This position involves leading bakery clerks, including apprentice bakers, bakery designers, wrappers, and fryers, ensuring smooth daily operations while maintaining high standards of quality and customer satisfaction.
In this role, Bakers are expected to provide prompt, friendly, and efficient customer service by greeting customers warmly, learning their names when possible, and offering assistance in finding products or fulfilling special requests. They answer telephone calls courteously while receiving product orders and manage the baking schedule by setting timelines and production priorities for the day's and upcoming orders. Daily baking tasks include preparing make-up dough, baking, frying, and quality checking all bakery products. Bakers must be vigilant about product freshness, removing stale items, correctly labeling products, and maintaining the cleanliness and safety of their work areas. They also perform inventory tasks such as inspecting incoming shipments and placing products in their proper locations based on store guidelines.
Hy-Vee Bakers are expected to operate and maintain equipment including mixers, proof boxes, ovens, sheeters, rounders, fryers, and dishwashers. Moreover, bakers lead by example in adhering to company policies regarding hygiene, dress code, and safety protocols. This position demands physical stamina, with requirements to occasionally lift up to 50 pounds and perform activities such as standing, stooping, reaching, and repetitive motions throughout the workday. This role is ideal for individuals who have a high school diploma or equivalent, along with six months to one year of similar or related baking or retail experience.
