The Utah Historical Society (UHS) is a venerable institution founded in 1897, dedicated to fostering curiosity about the past, informing the present, and strengthening the shared future of Utahns. As part of the 710 Department of Cultural and Community Engagement, the UHS operates with a mission to illuminate Utah's rich heritage through various initiatives including the National History Day, the Women’s History Initiative, Publications, Peoples of Utah Revisited, Library & Collections, and prominently, the Museum of Utah (MoU). The museum holds the distinction of being Utah's first state history museum and serves as a critical hub for cultural preservation and public education in Salt Lake County, Utah. Its commitment to inclusivity encourages all Utah residents to see themselves reflected in the state's history, fostering a respectful and inquisitive environment where diverse stories and perspectives are honored and shared. The Returnship position offered by the Utah Historical Society is a time-limited, part-time role, offered at an hourly wage of $17.00, based in Salt Lake County, UT. It is designed under the Return Utah program, a career reentry initiative supporting professionals reentering the workforce after a career break. This role is classified as non-exempt and involves up to 20 hours per week, including evening and weekend shifts to support the public initiatives of the Museum of Utah. Initially situated at 3760 S. Highland Drive up until the museum opening, the role transitions to the museum offices beginning January 2026. This role is focused on providing vital outward-facing support to museum operations through direct guest engagement at the museum's welcome desk, store, galleries, engagement rooms, and classrooms. Candidates will be responsible for ensuring a seamless, welcoming experience in accordance with best practices in visitor services and customer care. They will collaborate across the museum’s teams, including Programming and Collections, to deliver an enriching visitor experience and contribute to maintaining the museum's high standards of cleanliness and maintenance. The ideal candidates for this position are inquisitive, collaborative, and possess a strong interest in public history and cultural engagement. Experience in customer service, visitor services, or the cultural sector is highly desirable, especially within public institutions.
