San Luis Obispo, CA, USA, CA Full-Time $45 - $45
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is a key government agency responsible for regulating and overseeing all aspects of civil aviation within the United States. The FAA ensures the safety, efficiency, and effectiveness of the national airspace system by implementing stringent regulatory frameworks, managing air traffic control services, and promoting advances in aviation technology. Known for its critical role in maintaining safe skies, the FAA operates a wide network of facilities, including air traffic control towers, where it maintains high standards of operational excellence and oversight. This role is a supervisory position within an air traffic control facility operated by the FAA, focusing primarily on the management and oversight of air traffic controllers and other operational staff. The position involves significant responsibility in supervising a moderate-sized team engaged in the substantive elements of air traffic management, ensuring that operational standards meet rigorous safety and efficiency benchmarks. The supervisor will also play a vital role in planning, coordination, and communication between FAA facilities and associated civil organizations, addressing both day-to-day operational issues and long-term strategic initiatives. Responsibilities of this role extend beyond personnel oversight to encompass strategic resource planning, procedural development, and facility management. The supervisor will assess and recommend staffing, manage employee performance, and lead training and development programs to maintain and enhance workforce proficiency. This role demands not only administrative and leadership skills but also a deep understanding of air traffic control procedures, FAA regulations, and the dynamic environment of national airspace operations. Further duties include resolving employee grievances and disciplinary issues fairly and in alignment with FAA policies, ensuring compliance with both technical and administrative regulations, and actively participating in incident investigations to promote continuous safety improvements. The supervisor will maintain vital external communication channels with airlines, pilot associations, and community organizations to ensure that FAA services meet the needs and expectations of all aviation stakeholders. This position requires a minimum of three years of air traffic control tower experience and the possession of a CTO Certificate along with a current Class II Medical Certificate. The role is subject to Department of Transportation (DOT) and FAA mandated drug testing requirements, underscoring the critical nature of safety and compliance inherent to this position. The work schedule consists of 8-hour shifts and requires the employee to be physically present at the facility. The FAA offers comprehensive benefits to its employees, including health and dental insurance, vision coverage, life insurance, a flexible spending account, and a 401(k) plan with matching contributions. This employment opportunity provides a chance to contribute to national safety and security while developing a career within one of the most respected agencies in civil aviation. The supervisory role at the FAA is both challenging and rewarding, requiring a commitment to excellence, fairness, and continuous improvement in an ever-evolving operational landscape.
