Stuart, FL, USA, FL Hourly $44 - $44
This position is with an air traffic control facility operating under Visual Flight Rules (VFR) within an Air Traffic Control Tower. The establishment is committed to maintaining the highest safety standards while managing the orderly and timely flow of air traffic at the controlled airport. The facility works under the guidance of a Tower Manager but requires incumbents to perform duties with significant autonomy, especially once trained and experienced. The facility operates in compliance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations, ensuring the safety of all flights through rigorous standards and procedures. The role of the Air Traffic Control Tower Operator involves managing a complex and dynamic traffic environment, requiring decisions that ensure both safety and efficiency. This includes directing the order of aircraft departures, assigning runways, coordinating with control centers and approach control, and managing the integration of Visual Flight Rules (VFR) and Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) traffic. Operators must maintain continuous communication with pilots and other controllers, perform real-time sequencing and separation of aircraft, and utilize navigational aids effectively. They must also be adept at interpreting weather conditions and adjusting operations accordingly, providing critical information to pilots to ensure safety. Operators are responsible for managing the use of communication frequencies and navigational aids such as radar and BRITE displays, ensuring these tools are functioning correctly and advising pilots on necessary changes. Coordination with other air traffic controllers is pivotal, especially during complex arrivals and departures, to maintain a seamless flow of air traffic with minimal delay. In cases of emergency or unusual situations, operators help orient lost or distressed pilots, coordinate with airport safety and emergency services, and implement protocols to manage incidents safely. The position offers an hourly pay rate of $44.13 with a hazardous weather hourly rate of $4.98. Employment is subject to stringent FAA guidelines including drug and alcohol testing, reflecting the critical nature of the role. The operator must have a valid Control Tower Operator (CTO) Certificate and a current Class II Medical Certificate, demonstrating their qualification and fitness to perform the demanding duties of air traffic control. This role also includes significant responsibility for preplanning traffic sequencing within the terminal’s jurisdiction, often reaching out five miles or more from the airport. Operators must maintain a continuous mental picture of the traffic situation, manage check points for traffic separation, and keep radio communication with aircraft in their control. They must be vigilant observers of weather reports, airport conditions, and navigational aid status, all of which impact operational decisions. The position also involves providing on-the-job training to new personnel, contributing to the development and proficiency of the team. Overall, this Air Traffic Control Tower Operator position is a critical role within the aviation industry, requiring strong decision-making skills, technical knowledge, and the ability to manage multiple high-stakes tasks simultaneously. It offers a challenging and rewarding career path within a highly regulated and safety-focused environment.

  • Possess a current Class II Medical Certificate

  • Minimum six months experience holding a CTO certificate with a facility rating or an FAA credential with a tower rating in an Air Traffic Control Tower
  • Ability to communicate effectively and maintain situational awareness under pressure
  • Willingness to perform duties independently under general supervision
