This position is for a Control Tower Operator (CTO) at an air traffic control facility specifically handling Visual Flight Rules (VFR) traffic. The Control Tower Operator is primarily responsible for the safe, orderly, and expeditious flow of air traffic under Visual Flight Rules conditions. This includes making crucial real-time decisions about the sequencing of arrivals and departures, managing runway assignments, and applying separation standards to maintain safe distances between aircraft. Operators use radar and radio communication tools to coordinate with pilots and other controllers. They must continuously monitor navigational aids, weather conditions, and operational status of equipment to provide timely and accurate information to pilots. Additionally, the CTO coordinates closely with other controllers and supervisory staff to manage varying traffic volumes and ensure adherence to established protocols. They are tasked with preplanning traffic sequencing, maintaining a mental picture of the traffic situation within their geographical control area, and handling instrument flight rules (IFR) traffic when necessary. This role also involves responsibilities such as operating airport lighting systems, issuing weather information, and managing emergency situations, including guiding lost or distressed pilots and coordinating with airport emergency services. Experience with FAA rules, air traffic control procedures, and certifications are essential, as is the capability to provide on-the-job training to less experienced controllers. Given the critical nature of the work, candidates must hold a current Control Tower Operator Certificate and a Class II Medical Certificate and comply with DOT/FAA drug and alcohol testing regulations.
