Houma, LA, USA, LA Hourly $41 - $41
The hiring establishment for this position is a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) controlled Air Traffic Control (ATC) facility that specializes in operating a Visual Flight Rules (VFR) Air Traffic Control Tower. The FAA is a government agency responsible for the safety and efficiency of air traffic within the United States airspace. This role operates within a structured and dynamic environment where the incumbent is entrusted to ensure the safe, orderly, and expeditious flow of air traffic at the airport under VFR conditions. The air traffic control tower operates under general supervision but requires the incumbent to independently perform established duties to manage air traffic effectively and safely. This position plays a crucial role in maintaining the high standards of safety and coordination that the FAA mandates, contributing to both national and regional air traffic management. This Air Traffic Controller position specifically requires the individual to make critical decisions affecting the order of aircraft departures and arrivals, runway usage, and traffic flow sequencing to optimize safety and minimize delays. The controller must work collaboratively with other controllers and utilize various navigational aids and communication frequencies to direct air traffic efficiently. The communication responsibilities include instructing pilots on changing radio frequencies and radar beacon codes, preplanning traffic sequencing, and coordinating with arrival and departure traffic to maintain separation standards. Weather conditions and other external factors greatly influence operational decisions; therefore, the controller studies weather reports, observes conditions from the tower, and relays critical information to pilots and relevant agencies. The incumbent also plays a pivotal role in emergency situations by orienting lost or distressed pilots and coordinating necessary emergency response services. Operating in a fast-paced, high-responsibility environment, the controller must continually monitor systems and maintain a mental picture of the evolving traffic area to ensure continuous safety and compliance with FAA regulations. The position also includes performing lower-grade duties for proficiency maintenance and providing on-the-job training to junior personnel. The pay rate for this role is $41.73 per hour with an additional holiday work rate of $4.98, reflecting the specialized skills required and the critical nature of this work. Overall, this position is ideal for a highly skilled, detail-oriented professional with previous tower experience and the proper certification who thrives in a high-stakes, safety-critical environment. The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent judgment, communication, and coordination abilities to support the FAA's mission of ensuring safe and efficient air transportation across the nation.
